Who We Are in Christ vs. The Lies We Believe: Encouragement for Moms

Mama, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of motherhood. It’s beautiful, messy, rewarding, and overwhelming—often all at the same time. But have you ever stopped to think about how much of your daily experience as a mom is shaped by what you believe about yourself?

The Bible has so much to say about who you are in Christ, yet so often, we live under the weight of lies that distort our identity and impact the way we mother. Today, let’s dive into what God’s Word says about who you are, how it contrasts with the lies we often believe, and why understanding this truth is essential to our calling as moms.

The Lies We Believe About Ourselves

From the moment we wake up to the sound of little feet pattering down the hallway, the enemy tries to whisper lies into our ears.

  • "You’re not enough."

  • "You’re failing your kids."

  • "You’ll never measure up to that mom on Instagram."

  • "You’re too broken to be a good mom."

These lies seep into our thoughts and affect how we see ourselves and our role as mothers. They make us feel inadequate, anxious, and sometimes even resentful. When we believe these falsehoods, we’re robbed of the joy and confidence God intends for us to have as we raise our children. But the good news is, we don’t have to live under the weight of these lies. The truth of God’s Word has the power to set us free (John 8:32).

What the Bible Says About Who You Are

As Christian moms, our identity is rooted in Christ. It’s not based on how Pinterest-worthy our homes are or how perfectly behaved our kids appear in public. It’s based on what God says about us. Here are some foundational truths about who you are in Christ:

  1. You Are Chosen

The Bible declares, "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9, NKJV).

You are not just any mom; you are chosen by God for this exact role, in this exact season. Your children were entrusted to you by Him, and He has equipped you to mother them. When the world’s standards make you feel inadequate, remember: God chose you.

  2. You Are Loved

Romans 8:37-39 tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (NKJV).

You are deeply loved by the Creator of the universe. His love is not based on your performance as a mom but on His unchanging character.

  3. You Are Equipped

Philippians 4:13 reminds us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (NKJV).

God doesn’t call you to a task without equipping you for it. Even on the days when motherhood feels impossible, His strength is available to you. You don’t have to rely on your own ability because His power is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Breaking Free from the Lies

Understanding who you are in Christ is the first step, but how do we break free from the lies that hold us back? Here are some practical steps to renew your mind and walk in the truth:

  1. Identify the Lies

Ask yourself: What negative thoughts or beliefs about myself have I been holding onto? Write them down and examine them in the light of God’s Word. For example, if you believe, "I’ll never be a good mom," counter it with the truth that God’s grace is sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9).

  2. Replace Lies with Truth

Memorize and meditate on scriptures that affirm your identity in Christ. When negative thoughts creep in, combat them with the truth. For instance, when you feel unloved, remind yourself of Romans 8:38-39.

  3. Speak Life Over Yourself

Words have power. Proverbs 18:21 says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (NKJV). Speak Biblical affirmations over yourself daily. Say out loud:

    • I am chosen. (1 Peter 2:9)

    • I am loved. (Romans 8:37-39)

    • I am equipped. (Philippians 4:13)

  4. Pray for God’s Perspective

Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you. Pray for the Holy Spirit to renew your mind and guide you in truth. Prayer is a powerful tool for overcoming the lies of the enemy.

How Your Identity Affects Your Motherhood

When you know who you are in Christ, it transforms the way you mother. Instead of parenting from a place of fear or inadequacy, you can parent from a place of confidence and grace. Here’s how embracing your identity impacts your motherhood:

  1. You Model God’s Love to Your Children

When you understand how deeply loved you are, you’re able to extend that same unconditional love to your kids. They don’t need a perfect mom; they need a mom who loves them as Christ loves us.

  2. You Break Generational Cycles

Many of us carry baggage from our own childhoods, but knowing who you are in Christ gives you the power to break destructive generational patterns. You can choose to raise your children in a home filled with grace, truth, and love.

  3. You Prioritize Discipleship

As a mom who knows her identity in Christ, you understand the importance of passing that knowledge on to your children. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up" (NKJV). Teaching your children who they are in Christ is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.

Living Out Your Calling

Mama, you were created for such a time as this (reference Esther 4:14). God has placed you in this season of motherhood not by accident, but by divine design. Embrace the truth of who you are in Him, and let that truth guide you in every aspect of your life.

Remember, the enemy wants you to feel inadequate and overwhelmed, but God wants you to know that you are chosen, loved, and equipped. By holding onto His Word and renewing your mind daily, you can walk in freedom and fulfill your calling as a mom.
