As Christian moms, one of our most important callings is to teach our children about Jesus and help them grow in their faith. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 22:6 to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” But how do we do this in our everyday lives? Here’s a guide to help you nurture your child’s faith in a practical, heartfelt way.
1. Read the Bible Together
One of the simplest but most impactful things you can do is read the Bible with your children. When they are little, start with age-appropriate Bible stories that are engaging and easy for them to understand. There are wonderful children’s Bibles with illustrations and simplified text that can make the stories come alive.
I know some people are opposed to using children's Bibles, but I've found that introducing God's word to children is much like introducing them to any other complex subject. For example, when my child flips on the light switch at three years old and asks how it works, I will give him a truthful yet simplified answer. Then as he grows, we can learn in more detail about how the electricity in our home works. Remember, it's all about laying a foundation and for this to work the child must understand what you are teaching.
However, that is not the only thing to do when children are young. It’s important to also read from a regular Bible so they become familiar with Scripture as it is written. Let your children hear the beauty and power of God’s Word, even if some parts are more complex. You’ll be surprised how much they absorb!
2. Talk About What You Read
Reading the Bible is just the beginning. Take time to discuss what you’ve read. Ask questions like, “What did you learn about God?” or “How do you think this story applies to your life?” These conversations help children process and internalize the truths they’re learning.
It brings me so much joy when one of my children says, "Hey mom, that's just like what we read in the Bible this morning!" It shows me that they are beginning to make their own connections between their daily life and God's word.
Make it a habit to meditate on the Word together. The more you talk about God’s Word, the more it becomes a natural part of their thinking and decision-making.
3. Share Your Testimony
Children love hearing stories, especially real ones. Share with them how God has worked in your life. Tell them about answered prayers, moments of provision, and times when God’s presence felt especially close.
Your testimony is a powerful way to show them that God is not just a character in a book but a living, active presence in our lives. These personal stories help build their trust in God and His faithfulness.
4. Pray Together—About Everything
Prayer is a cornerstone of faith. Make it a daily habit to pray with your children, not just at bedtime or mealtimes but throughout the day. Pray about everything—big and small.
When they have a squabble with a sibling, a disagreement with a friend, or even just a moment of gratitude, invite them to bring it to God in prayer. Teaching them to rely on God in all situations builds a deep, lasting faith.
5. Talk About Sin and Grace
Sin is a reality we all face, and children need to understand it in light of God’s grace. When they encounter moments of disobedience or see wrongdoing in the world, use these as opportunities to talk about Jesus’ sacrifice.
Explain that Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins and that through Him, we are forgiven. This helps children grasp the concept of grace and the incredible gift of salvation.
6. Worship as a Family
Worship is a joyful way to connect with God. Sing praise and worship songs together at home or in the car. Create a playlist of family favorites and let your kids join in.
Worshiping as a family not only brings joy but also teaches children that praising God is a natural part of life. It’s a beautiful way to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and reverence.
7. Memorize Scripture Through Songs
Scripture memory doesn’t have to be boring or difficult. One fun way to help your children memorize Bible verses is through songs. Many Christian artists create catchy scripture-based songs that make it easy for kids to learn and remember God’s Word.
Pop these songs on during car rides or playtime. Before you know it, your kids will be singing Scripture!
8. Be an Example of Faith
Perhaps the most powerful way to disciple your children is through your own life. Let them see you living out your faith. Read your Bible in their presence, pray openly, serve others, and show love and kindness.
Children learn by watching, and your actions will speak louder than any words. When they see you living for Jesus, they’ll be inspired to do the same.
Final Thoughts
Teaching your children about Jesus is a journey filled with love, grace, and joy. Remember, you’re planting seeds of faith that will grow over time. Trust God to do the rest.
Start small, be consistent, and watch as God works in your children’s hearts. After all, the greatest gift you can give them is a life rooted in Christ. 💛
